Free Singing Lessons Mark Oceanaire’s 60th Anniversary

There’s a lot of enjoyment to be had from singing – whether it is for yourself or for an audience. Why not learn from a group with six decades of experience? The Oceanaires are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. In recognition of that, they are providing free singing lessons every Tuesday at the New Life Church in Toms River. Their style is uniquely American, in the form of barbershop harmony, which dates back to the late 19th century. You’ve probably seen them performing at local events.

Ralph Gazeley

Corvallis, OR - June 8, 2017


Ralph Gazeley joined the Lord Monday, June 5, 2017 at his home in Corvallis, Ore. He was 88 years old. Ralph was born in Portland, Ore., July 6, 1928. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1946. After high school he joined the U.S. Army and served in Japan. He attended the University of Oregon where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1952.


In 1954 Ralph married Marian Kruse of Coos Bay, Ore. They lived in San Mateo, Calif., before settling in Coos Bay to raise their family. Ralph and Marian retired to Bend where they enjoyed the sunshine of central Oregon. They had lived in Corvallis since 2001.

Concert features barbershop champions

South Bend, IN - June 1, 2017


A barbershop harmony concert takes place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Clay High School Auditorium, 19131 Darden Road. The lineup features Instant Classic, which won the Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2015 International Quartet Championship. Its members include brothers Kohl (baritone) and Kyle Kitzmiller (bass), who grew up in Elkhart County, and David Zimmerman (tenor) and Theo Hicks.

Harmony drives Lowell-area barbershop quartet's success

They run into the powerhouse barbershop quartet backstage. " 'There's no way we can win,' " recalls David Adams, of Lowell, a member of Fireside Quartet, the group based in Greater Lowell. " 'That quartet always beats us.' " "They beat us like a rented mule in October," adds Daniel Schwartz, of Brookline. Think of it as the Red Sox versus the Yankees before 2004.

Barbershop chorus entertains crowd

It's seven o'clock on a Wednesday evening at Flamborough's Millgrove Community Centre and the first bugs of spring are starting to gather outside over the two baseball diamonds. Inside the hall, about 70 men of various ages are mingling, trading jokes and sipping coffee. Toronto is still in the playoffs, so many are wearing Leaf jerseys.
