Barbershop quartet delivers gift of song on Valentine’s Day

Vacaville, CA - February 14, 2017

Singing greetings were heard around Solano County for Valentine’s Day. Marion Graff, who volunteers at David Weir K-8 Preparatory Academy, booked the “Sounds About Right” barbershop quartet to visit the fourth grade classroom of Eileen Witt-Albedi Tuesday. “I’ve done this before for teachers and the kids just love it,” Graff said.

Singing valentines: Barbershop chorus hits all the right notes

Howard Shokler of Greenville scored some “big-time points” with his wife while manning his booth at the Uptown Greenville Umbrella Market a few years ago. “I saw these guys dressed all funny going around and singing,” Shokler said of a barbershop quartet with the Carolina Chord Connection Barbershop Chorus. “I asked them if they did any romantic music, and when they said ‘Yes,’ I called my wife up on the phone and they sang to her. ... I scored big-time points that day.”

Serenading your sweetheart may not be part of your romance repertoire on Valentine’s Day but help is on the way. The Sun Parlour Chorus Barbershop Harmony Society is offering a special Singing Valentine package that’s sure to win his or her heart. Wanting to spark a bit of romance on the day devoted annually to love, the chorus’s Singing Valentine includes a quartet of male singers who will perform a pair of love songs and then present the lucky recipient with a rose and a card. In this musical age of hip-hopping rappers and screeching sopranos, the smoothly blended barbershop tones of the Inland Sound Chorus, led by Director Carl Buntin, warmed the hearts of its Sun Lakes audience. The concert, featuring “Songs of the South,” was sponsored by the Chorale of Sun Lakes, and emceed by Chorus and Chorale member Bill Shova.
